The Madeira Literary Festival has won an important place in the cultural panorama of Portugal. Authors like Eduardo Lourenço, Alberto Manguel, Helder Macedo, Naomi Wolf, Gonçalo M. Tavares, Zygmunt Bauman, Alessandro Baricco, Irene Pimentel, José Eduardo Agualusa, João de Melo, Patricia Dunker and Luiz Ruffato have all participated in the event.

The Festival consists of a weeklong programme of encounters, debates, shows, autograph sessions and many other events in Funchal.
