The construction of the São Tiago Fortress began in 1614 and its purpose was to defend the city of Funchal from attacks by pirates and privateers. Royal master builder Jerónimo Jorge was in charge of the works and years later, the construction was completed by his son, Bartolomeu João. Under the responsibility of engineer Tossi Columbina (who designed the Port of Funchal), the first phase of the construction was completed in the mid-17th century and the second phase in the mid-18th century. Over the years, the fortress has been used for various purposes, including serving as quartering of the British troops, the military police and the Funchal Lancers Squad at different times. It also sheltered victims of the massive floods that occurred on the island in 1803.

banner Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to the white gold, the Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.
