The Funchal Ecological Park was created in 1994 on the initiative of Funchal City Hall. Its main objectives are to preserve nature, promote environmental education and provide recreational and leisure facilities for visitors. Currently the park covers an area of 10 km2 of mountainous terrain, in north area of Funchal.

It lies between 470 metres above sea level at the Santa Luzia Stream and 1818 metres above sea level at Areeiro Peak.

Its geography, landscape and picnic areas, plus various easy access points make the Funchal Ecological Park an excellent place for enjoying leisure, recreational and sports activities in natural surroundings.

banner Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to the white gold, the Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.
