Located in Avenida do Infante, opposite Santa Catarina Park, the garden is open to visitors daily and admission is free. This institution has been managed under the authority of the Swedish Crown since 1873. Today the main house functions as a nursing home for the elderly. There is also a children’s crèche and a school.

The ample garden has a dense wooded area with a variety of trees, cobbled, walkways paved with basalt stones from the Madeira coast with designs added with limestone rocks brought in from Porto Santo.

Although the garden lies near one of Funchal’s main arteries, it exudes tranquillity.

Area: 5.000m2

banner Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to the white gold, the Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.
