The statue is allusive to the historical figure of João Gonçalves Zarco and was made by the the sculptor Francisco Franco in 1927.

This historical figure is very important to Madeira Island, as he was one the discoverers of the island under the command of D. Henrique and was later the first appointed Captain of Funchal.
