The Municipality of Funchal and the Department of Economy and Culture bet once again on the celebration of World Tourism Day through various initiatives that have marked the day.

The highlight of the day was the Round Table called "What Tourism Do We Want?”. This Round Table took place in the Nober Hall of the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater and was attended by the following speakers: António Almeida, President of the Madeira Tourism Observatory; Rui Campos Matos, Architect / Researcher; Ivo Correia, CEO of Sé Boutique Hotel; André Barreto, Director of the Quintinha de São João and Raquel Brazão, Director of the Department of Economy and Culture of the Municipality of Funchal, conversant in the specific reality of our Region. In turn, the present Moderator was Ricardo Oliveira, Director of the Madeira Newspaper.

On the other hand, there was a high level of adherence to the activities in Museums, namely in the workshops of the Museum “A Cidade do Açúcar” and in the Henrique and Francisco Franco Museum, and an equally pleasing number of visitors on this day, higher than regular days.

Similarly, in the Museum of Natural History, there was a great number of visitors, in this case 85, a much higher number than the other days.

The Department of Economy and Culture of the Municipality of Funchal keep contributing to the dynamism of local and regional culture, and increasingly develop ideas and projects that captivate the attention and interest of the public.

On September 27th and 28th the city of Funchal will be celebrating the "World Tourism Day".

The Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater, the “Lavradores” Market, the "Henrique e Francisco Franco" museum and the "A Cidade do Açúcar" museum join efforts to bring the most diverse activities to the public, in a celebration that you cannot miss.

On the 27th we have the "Must of The Day" in a revealing conference, ending the festivities on the 28th at 9pm with the musical "Fado Tango", with performances by Vânia Fernandes and Luís Sousa, at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater.

Funchal was named the most hospitable city in Portugal by the Airbnb platform users in 2018. Funchal topped cities like Aljezur and Vila Nova de Gaia, according to the 2018 ranking released by the popular accommodation portal. This distinction was based on the guest’s evaluation, considering the percentage of perfect evaluations and the total appreciations received by the hosts of these cities.

Dozens of professionals linked to the tourism sector discussed today, in Funchal, the strategy to follow by 2027. The initiative was the Turismo de Portugal, whose president, the Madeiran Luís Araújo, called contributions for the next decade in a plane that goes to the ground until early 2017.

Before the debate, we were presented 10 challenges and 5 strategic axes. This work results from meetings and surveys already made at international meetings in major markets such as Germany, the UK, France and Spain.

Among the various indexes analyzed, Funchal was the 5th city with the highest average number of nights in tourist accommodation establishments (35) in relation to the resident population, the 11th city in the Community area with the largest number of beds in tourist accommodation establishments, with more than 150 beds per 1000 residents, and at the same time, the 20th European city with the largest mean number of entries in museums, in both cases, relative to the size of the resident population.

Port of Funchal gains three new scales by the end of the year
