Amphibious chair enhances accessibility

Wednesday, 31 July 2019

Lido's Beach Complex now has a new amphibious chair following a successful application to the national "Praia Saudável" (Healthy Beach) program. This chair joins one already existing in Lido's Beach Complex and the other in Praia Formosa, to which is added the existing lift platform in Ponta Gorda, “affirming the award“ Accessible Beach, Beach for All ”, which this year was hoisted in these three spaces ”, said the mayor. Idalina Perestrelo took the opportunity to thank the recognition of this national project for the work that Funchal is doing, remembering that “the beaches of Funchal are from everyone and for everyone. This is another piece of equipment that enhances the accessibility of our beach complexes that will add, this year, another big news which is the return to operation of the elevator in Barreirinha, which had been stopped for over a decade. For us, promoting accessibility in municipal public spaces has been essential. ”In 2019, 12 amphibious chairs were delivered across the country, Funchal being one of the cities contemplated.

banner Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to the white gold, the Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.
