European Commission distinguishes Funchal City Hall Measures

Tuesday, 20 August 2019

The crosswalks on the Estrada Monumental / Avenida do Infante and the Kiss & Ride project were elected by the European Commission as good European mobility practices. Smart crosswalks have been in operation since mid-year "in a solution that has combined pedestrian and road safety with energy efficiency." They consist of an intelligent backlighting system on the crosswalks, through sensors and dynamic signaling, both vertically and horizontally, which react to the proximity of pedestrians. At the moment it is detected a pedestrian that wishes to cross the road, the light on the floor and overhead lighting are activated automatically, increasing the visibility for pedestrians and drivers.

In addition to the smart crosswalks, the Kiss & Ride corridors implemented by the City Hall in schools in the municipality, a measure introduced in 2015, were also distinguished

as a good European mobility practice. The goal is to facilitate the entry and exit of passengers who then continue walking to their final destination. The implementation of Kiss & Ride corridors leads to the suppression of parallel parking on the carriageway, which prevents students from crossing between vehicles and increases the safety of crosswalk users near school entrances.

banner Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to the white gold, the Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.
