In the 20th century, Funchal and Monte were connected by a steam engine train. Trips up and down the mountain were a memorable experience for visitors of the city and memories of those times still linger in people’s minds.

Nearly a century later, we have another unique way to get up the mountain - the cable car.

From the cable car station located in the Old Town, this means of public transport is able to carry up to 800 passengers an hour in its 39 cabins equipped with eight seats each. Building this attraction was a pioneering process, since part of the route goes over some of the buildings in the city.

The project faced a number of engineering challenges, from building the foundations and constructing the intermediate support towers, which meant moving enormous metal structures to sites that were difficult to access and placing steel cables along a distance of 3200 meters.

The cable car takes about 15 minutes, rising 560 meters along the way. The journey allows you to see the city from a unique perspective. It starts out in an urban landscape, which is gradually replaced by lush green mountains and valleys with the bay of Funchal as the backdrop. People with limited mobility can enjoy the experience comfortably, since both the departure and the arrival stations are equipped to assist passengers who need help getting on and off the lift. The journey ends in an enchanting setting, in one of the most emblematic historical areas of Funchal.

There are various attractions in Monte that will make your visit special, including the Monte Church, where you will find the tomb of Charles I, the last emperor of Austria, as well as the Monte Palace Tropical Garden and the Municipal Park, where you can relax in a vibrant green landscape, and enjoy the view in a belvedere that overlooks the bay. Be sure to take an exciting ride in a traditional wicker toboggan to get your adrenalin flowing.
