During the 19th century, Funchal struggled to build a theatre on a par with the great European cities to serve as a stage for the city’s most important cultural events.
Since its inauguration on 11 March 1888, the Baltazar Dias Theatre has been the venue for artistic events like theatre plays, cinema, music, dance and others, and has become a landmark in Madeira’s arts and culture scene.

Guided tours
The theatre is available for tours where visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the theatre and its architecture. Inside the theatre, they are given an opportunity to see important backstage areas not usually open to the public.

Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds.
