At the heart of the bayside waterfront, this squares offers passers-by majestic views of the Atlantic and the stunning, unforgettable hills of Funchal.
As you walk along this square, you will discover areas for leisure, games and sports as well as park benches and lush carpets of plants and flowers.
Construction work in Avenida Arriaga began in 1914 and the avenue has become a historical and cultural landmark in the lives of its residents. It begins at Largo Dom Manuel and extends until the Rotunda do Infante. Walking through the avenue, with its typical Portuguese cobblestone sidewalks, you can admire the many types of towering trees, flowers and plants along the way.
You will come across authentic works of art, like the statue of João Gonçalves Zarco, one of the discoverers of the island, as you walk toward the east end of the city.
The avenue ends at the emblematic Cathedral of Funchal, which was commissioned by King Manuel I in the 15th century..
